THE FIBER MENAGERIE
ALPACA FRIENDS, IF IT HAS SOMETHING TO DO WITH FIBER IT IS LIKELY IN HERE SOMEWHERE SO ENJOY YOUR BROWSING
Profiting From Your Fleece
We alpaca producers do have a wonderful product. It is soft and luxurious. Our problem, as alpaca ranchers, is getting the fleece turned into a product that is saleable to the public. We see people selling their fleece for anywhere from $1 to as much as $12 - $15 per ounce. The difference in price is related to two things. The first difference is at what stage in the fleece to sweater process are we selling. Second is finding a market. Some fleece is sold on e-bay for a dollar or less per ounce some is sold as a sweater from a storefront for $15 plus per ounce.
They key to profitability is "value added". All "value added" means is that we add to the value of our fleece by taking it one or more steps closer to being a garment, blanket or hat. But, not all of us have the time and/or ability and inclination to make sweaters from our raw fleece. The money would be nice but some of us just cannot card, spin and knit. So we need to find businesses that can help move us along the path from fleece to sweater and increase what we get paid for this wonderful fleece we produce.
Since every alpaca grower has different needs and different goals there is no single answer to the question "How do I make my fleece business profitable?" The alpaca industry needs contacts in the fiber industry that are involved in various stages of the fleece to sweater process. We need people that will wash fiber, card fiber, spin fiber or produce finished products. We also need businesses that will perform several or all of the stages.
The alpaca fleece industry is presently in the infant stage. As such, we do not have that ready market for our fleece that wool producers have. It will take a number of years before we have a viable commercial fleece industry in the United States. So, for the time being it is up to us as producers to create and expand the market for alpaca fleece and fleece products. It is up to us to expose the public to our product and promote it's superior characteristics. We have to show them that alpaca garments are soft, light weight, warm, durable and not itchy. The most profitable market at this time seems to be with fiber artisans and small cottage industries. There are some commercial fiber mills that will take your fleece and return a finished product but they are the exception rather than the rule. At some point we must start supporting fiber co-ops because they are the next step towards the commercial market we would all like to have available for our fleece. That though, is a topic for further discussion in a future newsletter.
We have created a Fiber Resources area on our website to help with just what we have been discussing. There are hundreds of businesses that are involved in some or all stages of fiber processing. There are mills that will take your raw fleece and return finished products and crafters who will take your yarn to make goods for your retail store and others that do several of the stages. Each business can help generate income for someone in our alpaca family. We encourage you to look through our fiber Resources section and see if there is a business there that can help you turn a bigger profit.
If there is a business or person you know of that should be on this list please let us know. We will get their business out in front of our alpaca friends. It will help them, us and the alpaca industry as a whole. Either send us the information or contact them and have them send it to us. If there are any subjects you would like to see addressed in our newsletters please drop us a note. I will be happy to research the subect and present the facts, and diffent expert points of view. Then you can easily find the information you need to make informed decisions for your business. We hope this page will be of help to some of you out there. May God Bless and have a great day.

We can turn the fiber into roving for spinners or yarn. We do take the fiber from washing to finishing if the customer prefers. We do notice that due to the amniotic fluid of cria fleeces and the weaning process- these are not the best fleeces for procesing. We call it the "velcro" fleece and much vegitation does not come out. It often has 2 breaks, one at the tip and the other at weaning. That said, we have ben able to occasionally process one we are pleased with. We have processed both Suri and Huacaya fleeces

<ABC Ranch Naturals 15249 Hwy. 19 Martinsburg, MO 65264 573-492-6472 email angoramom@hotmail.com web site: www.abcranch.com Contact persons are Carl or Bonnie Ahrens. Bonnie writes: We do all types of natural fibers up to 8 inches in length; especially the fine fibers. I raise merino sheep and angora rabbits and our equipment does a wonderful job of blending. We suggest a 20-30 per cent blend of angora to the merino. We have angora fiber you can purchase and add to your soft wool if you wish. On very coarse fibers, llama and alpaca we do recommend a 20 per cent blend.

News item..Baron Woolen Mills reopens After a three-year hiatus, Baron Woolen Mills in Brigham City, UT, has reopened. Current owners, Bob and Marva Sadler, have reorganized the business after obtaining a conditional-use permit to reopen the outlet at the historical property. Under the auspices of the city's master plan, the property is in the process of being rezoned as a heritage preservation property. "We are grateful and highly appreciative for all the work put in by Brigham City's planning department and planning commission for all they have done to help preserve one of the Intermountain West's oldest manufacturers," said Marva. "The heritage preservation status will help us in our efforts to restart the mill, and meet our obligations to creditors. This will also help re-establish a market for many wool growers in WY, MT, CO, ID, OR and many other U.S. states and Canadian provinces." Baron's is currently offering blankets and woolen yarns at its retail outlet at 56 North 500 East in Brigham City. The company will continue accepting mail and telephone orders. Customers may also access and purchase goods via Baron's Web site at http://www.baronscommonwealth.com. Baron also will continue offering a barter/trade program with wool producers and other interested parties through the United States and Canada. The trade program provides greater value to wool producers for the traded fiber rather than just selling the wool on the open market. Black and colored fiber wool, along with alpaca and mohair, are now being accepted. For more information, call Baron's at (435) 723-6117.
