One of the beautiful animal ranches in Iowa is Maple Tree Farm. Tom and Jenny Kardoes, the proud Iowa alpaca ranchers enjoy a full-time raising and breeding alpacas on their ranch in Kanawha, Iowa. The Kardoes was looking to make a sound investing through alpaca breedings. After several visits to various alpaca ranching operations and a chance to be with the gentle alpacas themselves, the couple is now building their own alpaca ranching enterprise.

USA Alpaca Ranching Industry

Alpaca ranching is a growing industry in the US. Alpaca ranching operation inNorth America around the 1980s. The first alpaca was imported to the US in 1983. Majority of the alpaca population reside in South America. Alpaca ranching, considered to be an alternative livestock, is a growing industry that attracted investors and ranchers nationwide. Although the market for alpacas is still small, it is expanding as the numbers of farmers and breeders have shown more interest in breeding these beautiful animals. Currently there are over 30,000 registered alpacas in the North American market.

A good start to alpaca ranching is having grassy pasture large enough for the feeding of your alpacas and their crias. Fresh water and hay as well as good access to veterinary care are also required for alpaca ranching.
